How to Prep for the Holidays

Hey y’all,

The holidays are soon approaching, and while this can be the most joyous and chaotic time of the year, it can also be sad and difficult for others.

Perhaps you’ve lost someone close to you, are struggling financially, or are distant from your family; there are steps you can take to help you cope and make the most of the holiday season.

1. Acknowledge your feelings

It's important to recognize and accept your emotions. It's okay to feel sad, stressed, and tense during the holidays, and denying these feelings can make them more overwhelming. Take a moment to pause and reflect on what you are feeling. You can do this by finding a quiet, comfortable space and focusing your attention inward. Writing down your thoughts and feelings in a journal can be a powerful way to acknowledge and process emotions. It allows you to explore and express them without judgment.

2. Reach Out for Support

Remember that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. It's an essential step in taking care of your well-being and addressing your challenges. Don't hesitate to seek help, which can lead to personal growth, recovery, and resilience. Share your feelings with a trusted friend or family member. Sometimes, talking about what's bothering you can provide relief and emotional support. If your challenges are complex, long-lasting, or significantly impacting your daily life, consider reaching out to mental health professionals like therapists, counselors, or psychiatrists.

3. Allow yourself to grieve

If your sadness is related to a recent loss or challenging life event, allow yourself to grieve and process your emotions healthily. Allow yourself to recognize and experience the wide range of emotions that come with grief. These emotions may include sadness, anger, guilt, confusion, anxiety, and even moments of happiness.

4. Prioritize self-care

Remember that self-care is not a luxury; it's a vital part of maintaining your overall well-being. Prioritizing self-care is an investment in your health and happiness, allowing you to better cope with life's challenges and stressors. Make it a routine, and adjust your self-care activities to suit your preferences and needs. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating well, and engaging in physical activity. These actions can help improve your mood.
