Summer Self Care: Tips from Indigo Movement

Hey y’all,

We’ve made it to July and summer is in full effect. As we all spend more time outdoors we have to replenish our bodies. This month we’re going to start off with some much needed self-care! We’ll be discussing the importance of updating your diet and skincare routine for the sunny months ahead.

Dietary Adjustments for Summer

Hydration: Staying properly hydrated is crucial during the summer. Aim to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to replenish fluids lost through sweat. Opt for refreshing drinks like infused water with slices of fruits or herbs to make hydration more enjoyable.

Magnesium and Electrolytes: Sweating during hot weather can deplete essential minerals like magnesium and electrolytes. Include magnesium-rich foods such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and legumes in your diet. Additionally, consider incorporating electrolyte-rich drinks or natural coconut water to replenish electrolyte levels.

Protein: To support your body's needs during the summer, ensure an adequate intake of protein. Include lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, lentils, and tofu in your meals. Protein is essential for repairing tissues, maintaining muscle health, and promoting overall vitality.

Skincare Essentials for Summer

Sunscreen: Applying and reapplying sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. We recommend using Black Girl Sunscreen, a brand specifically formulated for melanin-rich skin. It offers broad-spectrum protection while being lightweight,non-greasy, and doesn't leave a white residue on the skin, making it ideal for daily use.

Nightly Exfoliation: Summer can lead to a buildup of dead skin cells, especially on the heels of the feet. Regular exfoliation helps promote smoother, healthier skin. Consider using a gentle exfoliating scrub or a pumice stone during your shower routine to keep your skin looking radiant.

Switching to Lighter Oils: During the summer, it's beneficial to switch to lighter oils that won't feel heavy on your skin. Opt for watermelon, grapeseed, or sesame seed oils as they are non-comedogenic and provide hydration without clogging pores. If you prefer a thicker texture, whipped mango butter is an excellent option for intense moisturization.

Weekly Clay Mask and Moisturizing Sheet Mask: Pamper your skin with a weekly clay mask, such as Helen Rose, to draw out impurities and excess oil. On other days, indulge in a moisturizing sheet mask like Patchology, which deeply hydrates and nourishes your skin. This alternating routine will keep your skin balanced and glowing.

Remember, the key to maintaining healthy skin and overall well-being during the summer is consistency and proper care. So, prioritize your skincare routine, nourish your body with a balanced diet, and embrace the sun responsibly. Enjoy the warm weather while taking care of yourself!

Stay radiant and have a wonderful summer!
