Lesson Learned: It Costs to be the Boss
2024 was an expensive year for the entire world! I saw fellow business owners close their doors and put their businesses on pause, and some had to cut staff to the point that the owners were working the floor again. Being an entrepreneur and a guardian of children and elders is not for the weak of hearts.
Q1 of 2024 was easeful, straight RomCom movie bliss. Now, Q2 had me holding onto my britches. I've forgotten how much it costs to move, design and all the other costs you don't plan for, yet they come. In business, you learn to borrow capital so you can hold onto your own and make reasonable payments over time. As some of you know, borrowing capital didn't go as planned. By June 2024, I became my own bank.
Q3 and Q4 were spent in recovery mode and living a very modest life. With the spending that was done earlier in the year, balancing my books was non-negotiable. During these 6 months, I learned that I will be financially okay. And I understand many people aren't blessed to make that statement as firmly and as boldly as I can. And as a woman. And as a Queer woman. And as a Black woman. I give great thanks and pay honor to those who came before me, who fought, protested, sacrificed, were killed, jailed, ostracized, and much more, so I can say, "I will be financially okay."
Knowing these things, I understand it will always be part of my duty to pay it forward to others. I want to continue using my gifts to help the next person as others help me.
Love,
Tiana M. Duncan
