Transforming Lives Through Community Nonprofits

Seattle’s Pongo Poetry Project, Yoga Behind Bars, and Bike Works empower individuals through healing and growth. Pongo uses poetry to help youth overcome trauma, Yoga Behind Bars provides mindfulness tools to incarcerated individuals, and Bike Works promotes cycling education and sustainability. Pongo Poetry Project

The Pongo Poetry Project is a local nonprofit engaging youth in writing poetry to foster healing and growth. It is focused on supporting individuals coping with trauma such as abuse, neglect, racism, and violence and has mentored over 7,100 participants. Its programs demonstrate significant therapeutic benefits, and its publishing initiative has released 16 poetry collections authored by youth. Through the Pongo Method, the organization trains professionals to create trauma-informed writing programs, inspiring the establishment of 101 therapeutic poetry initiatives worldwide, including in the U.S., El Salvador, Poland, South Africa, and Japan. Yoga Behind Bars

Yoga Behind Bars is a nonprofit organization based in Seattle that brings trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness programs to incarcerated individuals. The organization aims to offer tools for self-awareness, healing, and personal transformation to people in prisons, jails, and detention centers. By addressing trauma, stress, and emotional well-being, Yoga Behind Bars seeks to reduce recidivism, foster resilience, and promote positive change in individuals and their communities. Bike Works Seattle

Bike Works Seattle a nonprofit dedicated to building a healthier, more connected community through cycling. It offers youth education programs to teach bike repair, maintenance, and riding skills, empowering young people and fostering environmental stewardship. Through its community bike shop, Bike Works provides affordable bicycles, parts, and repair services, with proceeds supporting its initiatives. The organization’s Earn-a-Bike program enables participants to earn a bike by learning repair skills and volunteering, while its bike recycling efforts refurbish donated bikes to reduce waste and increase access to cycling.
