Space Between is a nonprofit organization dedicated to facilitating human and school transformation through mindfulness practices nurturing mental health, and social emotional learning for students. Guided by the vision of ensuring that all students are well and whole, they work to create meaningful change in the Seattle area and beyond. School partnerships are their primary focus. It includes weekly classroom mindfulness lessons for students, professional learning for teachers and staff, programming for families, and after school mindfulness and movement. Upower is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering underserved youth through trauma-informed coaching that incorporates movement and play. Their mission addresses systemic inequalities by offering access to the physical, social-emotional, and academic benefits of physical activity. In King County, disparities in sports participation among low-income, non-English speaking, and Youth of Color have been exacerbated by COVID-19, leading to increased screen time and decreased physical activity among children.
To counter these challenges, Upower collaborates with community partners to provide free, in-person movement classes, fostering safe spaces for youth to engage in activities like fitness games, sports, and cardiovascular conditioning. These programs build positive relationships, resilience, and life skills while mitigating the impact of trauma. Upower aims to dismantle systemic barriers to play and promote equitable opportunities for youth enrichment. Learn more about them HERE.
The America SCORES program was created in 1994 by Washington, D.C. teacher Julie Kennedy to provide constructive after-school activities for her students, steering them away from risks like gang activity. Combining her passions for soccer and poetry, Julie taught students soccer on good weather days and poetry writing and performance on others. This approach led to increased student engagement, improved academic performance, and greater physical activity. By incorporating service-learning, students also gained confidence and learned to effect change in their communities. The program's success led to its national expansion in 1999 which includes Seattle, Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and more. Learn more about them HERE.
