Beat The Heat With These Tips!
Hey y’all,
Earth has seen the 15 hottest days on record in this month alone! With the US reaching record-high temperatures over the last few weeks, make sure you’re prepared to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Please read up on our tips below on how to keep it cool for the remainder of your summer :)
1. Summer bedding. Swapping out your sheets during the summer is important, especially if you’re a hot sleeper or experience night sweats. Of course, having an air conditioner or a fan can help, but when it isn’t an option, make sure to wear PJs in fabrics like linen (it wields natural temperature-regulating properties!) and opt for bedding in linen or percale, which are the most breathable and have a cooling effect. If you want to be extra, place your sheets in the freezer and put them on your mattress before bed!
2. Blackout curtains or shades. Keep the room as cool as possible during the daytime: close drapes, blinds, and windows to shield the indoors from the sun and outside air. If the evening cools down enough, open your windows and run fans to circulate fresh air.
3. AC, fans, or visit cooling enters. Having your AC running all summer long can be costly. But here are a few tips: use a programmable thermostat, keep the AC unit clean to keep it running efficiently, don’t leave it on full blast all the time, and invest in ceiling fans. Also, if you’re using fans, you should place outward-facing fans on the warmer side of your home to blow the hot air out and inward-facing fans on the cooler side to draw cool air in. But the best alternative is to visit your local cooling center or community center pool!
4. Cold packs and neck cooling tubes. Keep cold packs on hand in your freezer. Cold packs placed on the head, groin, and underarms help cool the body down and combat the symptoms of heat exhaustion. Even if someone isn’t experiencing the symptoms of heat exhaustion, having a cold pack on hand while at the pool, beach, or hiking can help avoid overheating in the first place. There are also neck cooling tubes (like this!) which are especially great for when you’re doing outdoor activities.
5. Sunshades. No, we’re not referring to the sunshades for your face but for your car! Sunshades offer a dual purpose: on hot days, they keep the interior of your parked car cool so you don't suffer when you get back in, and they also protect against the damaging effects of UV rays. We've all seen badly discolored, cracked, and dried-up plastic dash pads! Even leaving a small crack in your window will promote ventilation and help to keep your car cool when you return.
