The Power of Breath

Hey y’all,

This month we'll be exploring the power of breath in movement! Breathing is an important component of exercise that is often overlooked until you realize you've been holding your breath. Incorporating breathing techniques can greatly enhance your workout experience and overall good health.

While exercising, proper breathing can help increase oxygen flow to your muscles, improve endurance, and optimize performance overall. Breathing deeply and rhythmically can also help reduce stress, calm the mind, and enhance the “mind-body” connection. It can be especially beneficial during activities that require coordination, such as yoga, pilates, and other forms of mindful movement.

Research has shown that adding diaphragmatic breathing, aka "belly breathing," during exercise can have several physiological benefits. For example, it can help improve cardiovascular function by reducing heart rate and blood pressure and increasing oxygen levels while decreasing low lung capacity, such as shortness of breath. Belly breathing can also aid in recovery by reducing muscle soreness and improving post-workout relaxation.

One popular practice that emphasizes breath in movement is the sun salutation, also known as Surya Namaskar in yoga. Sun salutation is a series of poses performed in a flowing sequence, synchronized with slow, deep inhales and exhales. It is often used as a warm-up or as a complete practice in itself. Sun salutations can be modified for different levels of fitness and flexibility, making them accessible for all.

In short, incorporating diaphragmatic breathing into your exercise routine, like sun salutations, can have numerous benefits for your physical and mental well-being. So take a deep breath, focus on your breath in movement, and experience the power of mindful breathing during your workouts this month!
