Tips For Staying Social and Energized as the Days Get Shorter

Managing social interactions and energy levels are challenging as the weather cools and the days become shorter. And if it’s raining, you’re definitely canceling your plans and staying home! But, the key to staying connected without feeling overwhelmed is to recalibrate your "social battery" through mindful practices. Here are some ways to help you sustain your social calendar during the colder, wetter months in Seattle!

Scheduled around your energy peaks

We all have energy peaks and dips throughout the day. Shorter daylight hours and cooler weather can definitely impact your energy. For example, schedule social activities during times when you naturally feel more alert or energetic (I.e. late morning or early afternoon when light exposure is higher). Want to catch up with a friend? Suggest a morning workout class together if your energy is higher in the morning. Not only do you get to socialize with them, but you’re getting a workout in for the day!

Also, don’t forget to rest and recharge. It may sound silly, but include intentional “rest breaks” in your calendar. These don’t have to be long, even a 15-minute break can reset your energy.

Plan Cozy Social Events

Because why not?! Opt for low-key events like movie nights, cozy dinners, or intimate gatherings that require less social stamina but still offer connection. Here’s a fun idea: host a self-care night where everyone can do face masks, massages, journaling, and more.

If braving the cold or rain seems too much, don’t feel guilty about opting for virtual hangouts on FaceTime or Zoom. (Does anyone remember House Party during Covid? R.I.P.) These can be a great way to stay connected without the effort of leaving your house.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Energy

Reduced daylight can sparks feelings of fatigue, low energy, or depression. If you find it hard to stay engaged socially due to seasonal changes, light therapy (using a lightbox to mimic sunlight) can help improve mood and energy.

Spending time outside, even on colder days, also helps boosts vitamin D levels, improving your mood and energy. Physical activity will also increase endorphins, making you feel more inclined to engage socially, too.
