Mental Health Awareness Month

This Wednesday marks the start of Mental Health Awareness Month to raise awareness about mental health issues and the importance of mental well-being. The month of May is dedicated to spreading knowledge about mental health, reducing the stigma surrounding mental illnesses, and advocating for policies that support people with mental health conditions. Each week, we’ll share ways to promote mental well-being as well as reduce and manage stress.

Tapping, also known as the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), is a technique that is thought to help improve emotional health and reduce physical pain. It's similar to acupuncture but without the needles! Instead, EFT uses fingertip tapping to apply pressure to specific meridian points on the body while the individual focuses on a particular problem and vocalizes positive affirmations.

EFT users often report that it helps them process and release negative emotions, such as fear, sadness, and anger, more effectively. By addressing unresolved emotional issues, EFT may contribute to improved emotional health and greater life satisfaction.

EFT can be learned and applied by anyone and does not necessarily require specialized equipment or the presence of a practitioner once the technique is learned. This makes it an accessible tool for many people looking for a self-help method to manage their emotions.

The technique combines elements of cognitive therapy and somatic stimulation. It is based on the idea that negative emotions are caused by disruptions in the body’s energy system. EFT has been used to treat a variety of issues, including stress, anxiety, phobias, emotional disorders, chronic pain, and even addiction. Some people report relief from their symptoms after using EFT, although more empirical research is needed to substantiate these claims as more than placebo effects.
