Celebrating Women's History Month: Honoring Dr. Gladys Tantaquidgeon
Women's contributions to health and wellness have shaped generations, from pioneering medical advancements to preserving holistic traditions. At Indigo Movement, we recognize the wisdom of women who have dedicated their lives to fostering well-being, both physically, mentally, and spiritually.
One such trailblazer is Dr. Gladys Tantaquidgeon (pictured right), a Mohegan medicine woman, anthropologist, and advocate for Indigenous healing traditions. A lifelong student of herbal medicine, she worked to preserve Mohegan cultural knowledge and bring awareness to the power of natural remedies. Her research in Native American healing practices helped bridge the gap between traditional and modern medicine, ensuring the wisdom of holistic health was passed down to future generations.
Beyond her research, Dr. Tantaquidgeon co-founded the Tantaquidgeon Museum in 1931, the oldest Native American-run museum in the U.S., dedicated to preserving Mohegan culture and traditions. She also worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, supporting Indigenous communities and advocating for the recognition of Native healing practices. Her efforts played a crucial role in ensuring the survival of cultural knowledge that continues to benefit generations today.
Dr. Tantaquidgeon's work reminds us of the importance of balance—between mind, body, and spirit. This Women’s History Month, we invite you to embrace her philosophy by prioritizing your own well-being. Whether through movement, massage, or mindful relaxation, self-care is a way to honor the legacies of those who came before us.
Cheers,
Team Indigo Movement
