Breast Cancer Awareness + Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Hey y’all,

October is best known for Fall and all things Halloween, including the countdown to Día de los Muertos! But most importantly, it is also the month of Breast Cancer and Domestic Violence Awareness.

Breast cancer is the most common cancer for women in the U.S., except for skin cancers. It is about 30% of all new female cancers each year.

Overall, the average risk of a woman in the U.S. developing breast cancer sometime in her life is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer. This also means there is a 7 in 8 chance she will never have the disease.

Breast self-exam, or regularly examining your breasts on your own, can be an important way to find a breast cancer early, when it’s more likely to be treated successfully. Read here on how you can conduct your own breast self-exam at home.

Domestic violence is prevalent in every community, and affects all people regardless of age, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, gender, race, religion, or nationality. An average of 20 people are physically abused by intimate partners every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually. 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been physically abused by an intimate partner, and 1 in 5 women and 1 in 7 men have been severely physically abused by an intimate partner. Millions of Americans live in daily, silent fear within their own homes. For more information and resources, please visit National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

For the month of October, Indigo Movement would like to acknowledge 1 person who has been impacted by breast cancer and 1 person who has been impacted by domestic violence. We are partnering with Om Thrive - Yoga for survival. Om Thrive’s mission to provide healing yoga practice to survivors of domestic violence. If you, or someone you know, has been impacted by either, please reply to this email and we will enter their name in raffle for a chance to win a 60-minute massage. The raffle will be held at the end of this month and the 2 winners will be notified by email.

Cheers,

Tiana
