Lavender Rights Project

Hey y’all,

Black trans women and nonbinary femmes are the most underserved population within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Founded in 2017, the Lavender Rights Project (LPR) advocates for a world that “elevates the power, autonomy, and leadership of the Black intersex & gender diverse community through intersectional legal and social services”. It is a Black Trans Femme-led, BIPOC trans-staffed grassroots organization serving the Seattle and Tacoma areas.

LPR disrupts oppressive systems that target Black gender diverse and intersex communities of color and lead to disproportionate levels of poverty, housing disparities, and gender-based violence, especially among Black and Indigenous people. They offer legal and housing services in addition to their Gender-Based Violence Prevention (GBVP) Program and a Black Trans Legal Professionals Network.

The legal services include direct representation, consultations, and legal advice for criminal law, civil rights law, and name & gender marker change legal services for people in jail or prison.

The housing service serves all Black gender diverse individuals experiencing homelessness with an intention to prioritize Black trans women, femmes and non-binary individuals. They aim to invest in the overall wellness and health of the community, by providing services for physical, mental and spiritual wellness, and offering a safe space for rest, work, and meeting.

The Gender-Based Violence Prevention program is a specialized task force to help stop violence against Black trans people. Last year was the deadliest year on record for the trans community and a majority of the victims were Black. The program is strategically collaborating with leaders and accomplices alike to bring an end to both anti-Blackness and transmisogyny in King County and South Sound.

Whether it’s giving your time, resources or donating financially, let the giving begin!

Cheers,

Tiana
