Celebrate Juneteenth With Indigo Movement

Hey y’all,

It’s the month of celebration, and this week we’re talking about Juneteenth! Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. The history of Juneteenth dates back to June 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Texas, issued an order which proclaimed the freedom of all enslaved people in Texas.

As Juneteenth has become nationally recognized we want to be sure that we provide you with some fun and educational ways that you can get involved in the celebration of this holiday.

Here are some family-friendly ways you can celebrate, right in your backyard!

Saturday, June 17: Abundance of Hope is hosting their annual fundraiser on June 17th at the Columbia City Theater! Through this event, they hope to promote healing, reconciliation, and transformation through education and conversation. Get your tickets today and support the work they do to provide critical resources and services to our underserved communities. Email Malissa@aofcenter.org to learn more.

Sunday, June 18: Songs of Black Folk celebrates its second year at the iconic Paramount Theater this Sunday. Be whisked away on a musical journey as we are walked through the evolution of Black music from its beginnings on the African continent, over the Atlantic, and into the present.

Monday, June 19: Gather at Jimi Hendrix Park in Seattle for Summer of Soul. Enjoy a day of music, food and education honoring the resilience of the Black community.

Cheers,

Tiana
